How to move CS2 to another drive without re-downloading
How to move CS2 to an SSD or another drive through Steam without downloading it again, and how much space it needs.
CS2 takes up tens of gigabytes. If your main drive is full or you want the game on an SSD for faster loading, Steam can move it without re-downloading.
🔧 Step 1. Create a Steam library on the new drive
Steam → Settings → Storage.
Click the drive dropdown → Add Drive and choose the drive you want.
📌 Step 2. Move the game
In the same Storage window, select the drive where CS2 is installed now.
Tick Counter-Strike 2.
Click Move and choose the new drive.
Wait until the transfer finishes.
🎯 Important
Your settings and binds are kept — they are stored in the Steam folder, not in the game folder.
If you have an
autoexec.cfg, it moves together with the game.Do not close Steam or turn off your PC during the move.
💡 Why an SSD
On an SSD, maps and models load faster and there are fewer stutters when assets stream in. It is noticeable in CS2.
⚠️ If the move does not start
Make sure the new drive has enough free space and run Steam as administrator.
