Version mismatch error with a server in CS2
What the game version error when connecting to a CS2 server means ("Server is running an older/newer version") and how to fix it.
This error appears when your game version differs from the server's. You can only connect when the versions match.
📌 Your game is outdated
Fully restart Steam — it will check for updates.
Open Library → Downloads and make sure the CS2 update is downloaded and installed.
If the update will not start, clear the download cache: Steam → Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache.
🖥️ The server is outdated
If you have the latest version but the server shows the error, the server has not updated yet. After a patch, third-party server owners need time to update. Wait or choose another server.
🔧 Betas
Check that you are not in a beta: CS2 Properties → Betas → "None" should be selected. A beta client may not connect to regular servers.
⚠️ Tip
Right after a big update, many third-party servers are unavailable for about an hour. That is normal — they will update later.
