CS2 will not run on Windows 7 or 8: what to do
Why CS2 does not work on Windows 7 and 8.1, which systems are supported and how to move to Windows 10 or 11 without losing files.
If you try to run CS2 on Windows 7 or 8.1, the game will not start or will show an error. Nothing is broken — these systems are simply not supported.
📌 Supported systems
Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11.
Linux — a native version.
Windows 7 and 8.1 are supported neither by the game nor by the current Steam client.
🔧 What to do
Upgrade to Windows 10 or 11. First check that your PC meets the Windows 11 requirements (it needs TPM 2.0); if not, install Windows 10.
Back up important files to an external drive before installing.
After installing, get fresh drivers for your GPU and motherboard from the manufacturers' sites.
🎯 32-bit Windows
CS2 runs only on a 64-bit system. Check Settings → System → About → System type. If it says 32-bit, you need to reinstall a 64-bit version.
⚠️ Do not use "workarounds"
Modified builds and patches that supposedly run CS2 on old systems are unreliable and can put your account at risk.
