CS2 is too dark: brightness and HDR
What to do if CS2 is too dark and enemies in shadows are hard to see: in-game brightness, HDR, monitor and Windows settings.
If dark corners in CS2 blend with enemy models, adjust brightness. The right setup makes models more visible without a washed-out image.
🔧 In-game brightness
Settings → Video → Brightness. Raise it slightly and check dark corners on several maps.
Keep "Boost Player Contrast" enabled — it makes models stand out.
📌 HDR in CS2
Settings → Video → Advanced → High Dynamic Range (HDR).
"Performance" gives more FPS. "Quality" can make lighting more contrasty.
This is an in-game lighting setting and is not related to Windows HDR mode.
🖥️ Windows HDR
If Windows HDR mode is on and your monitor handles it poorly, the game can look dull or too dark. Try turning HDR off in Settings → System → Display.
🎨 Monitor and driver
Check the monitor's picture mode: some monitors have a dark-area boost feature (e.g. Black eQualizer).
In the NVIDIA Control Panel you can adjust gamma and digital vibrance under desktop color settings.
⚠️ Do not overdo it
Too much brightness washes out the image and also hurts visibility. Find a value where both shadows and bright areas are clear.
