FPS dropped in CS2 after an update: what to do
Why FPS got lower after a CS2 or driver update and how to get performance back: shaders, settings reset, drivers and file checks.
After a big CS2 or GPU driver update, many players notice an FPS drop. It is usually temporary or fixed in a few minutes.
⏳ 1. Wait for shaders to compile
The first matches after an update can stutter while the game recompiles shaders. Play 1–2 matches or a bot map before drawing conclusions.
🔧 2. Check your settings
An update sometimes resets video settings. Check resolution, display mode, NVIDIA Reflex, V-Sync and fps_max.
📁 3. Verify files
Steam → right-click CS2 → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
🖥️ 4. Driver
If FPS dropped after a driver update, roll back to the previous version or do a clean install.
If only the game updated, install the latest driver: vendors often release fixes for big patches.
🎯 5. Reset graphics
Delete cs2_video.txt from your settings folder — the game recreates it and you can set graphics up from scratch.
⚠️ If everyone has it
After some updates FPS drops for most players. Then only the next Valve patch helps — keep an eye on game news.
