100% CPU or GPU usage in CS2: is it normal?

Why your GPU or CPU hits 100% in CS2, when that is normal, when it signals a problem and how to limit the load.

Many players worry when they see 100% usage in monitoring tools. In games this is often normal.

📌 GPU at 100%

  • This is normal: the GPU is rendering as many frames as it can.

  • Downside: at full GPU load, latency rises slightly. NVIDIA Reflex or an FPS cap helps.

🖥️ CPU at 100%

  • CS2 is CPU-heavy. If your CPU is fully loaded but the GPU is not, your FPS is CPU-limited.

  • Lowering graphics barely helps then. Closing background apps and capping FPS does.

🔍 When it is a problem

  • High CPU usage in the menu or on the desktop — check background programs and scan for malware and miners.

  • Constant 100% usage with low FPS — possibly overheating and throttling.

🔧 How to reduce load

fps_max 300

Cap FPS slightly above your refresh rate — the hardware runs cooler and quieter.

⚠️ Tip

Look at usage together with temperature and FPS. The 100% number on its own means nothing bad.
