CS2 "is already running" or will not close: how to fix

What to do if Steam says CS2 is already running, the game will not reopen or it hangs on exit: ending the process and restarting Steam.

After a crash or freeze, the CS2 process can stay in memory. Steam then thinks the game is running and will not let you open it again.

🔧 End the process

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
On the Processes (or Details) tab, find cs2.exe.
Click End task.

📌 Via Command Prompt

If the process will not end, open Command Prompt as administrator:

taskkill /F /IM cs2.exe

🖥️ Restart Steam

Sometimes Steam itself gets stuck. Fully exit: Steam → Exit, then start it again.

🎯 The game hangs on exit

Disable overlays (Discord, Steam, recording software) — they often prevent a clean shutdown.
Check for a stuck update download in Steam.
Update your graphics driver.

⚠️ If it keeps happening

Verify the game files and check Windows Event Viewer — it may show why the process does not end.
