How to fix network instability (Net Jitter) in CS2

Network instability (jitter) can be one of the most frustrating problems you run into in CS2. An unstable connection can get you killed on the server and cost you whole rounds you would otherwise have won. We will show you how to fix network jitter in CS2 and get a stable game with a few simple fixes.

What is network jitter (Net Jitter) in CS2?

Network jitter in CS2 makes the game "wobble" back and forth in time — it is not like high ping, where you roughly know what the delay will be. In game it can look as if you are teleporting, or, even worse, as if enemies are. You will die behind walls even though your ping seems low.

Play over Ethernet and update your drivers

First of all, if you can, play CS2 over a wired connection (Ethernet). Wi-Fi will always be less stable, which makes network jitter in CS2 inevitable. If you are not using Ethernet, it is time to switch to a cable.

One way to fix jitter in CS2 is to update your Ethernet adapter drivers. You can do this with the following steps:

  • Open Device Manager in Windows.

  • Open "Network adapters" and find your Ethernet device (usually Realtek or Intel).

  • Right-click it, choose "Properties" and click "Update driver" on the "Driver" tab.

  • If a driver update is needed, follow the on-screen instructions to install it. You may already have the latest versions installed.

If you really did need to update these Ethernet drivers, you should notice less network jitter in CS2 during matches.

Change the power saving settings

Another important step to get rid of jitter in CS2 is changing your PC's power saving settings. Follow these steps:

  • Open Device Manager in Windows.

  • Open "Network adapters" again and find your Ethernet device.

  • Go to "Properties" and find the "Power Management" tab.

  • Make sure all three options are unchecked ("Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power", "Allow this device to wake the computer" and "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer").

This should help with network jitter and rubber-banding in CS2. Stay in this menu for another minute, as we can change a few more network adapter settings to help with jitter even more.

  • Open the "Advanced" tab.

  • Find Energy-Efficient Ethernet, Green Ethernet, Interrupt Moderation and Power Saving Mode and make sure all of them are set to Disabled.

  • Click OK to save the settings.

How to check your network jitter fixes in CS2

Valve has made it very easy to check whether you have fixed network jitter in CS2.

  • Open the Settings menu and go to the "Game" tab.

  • In the "Telemetry" section, set "Show network problems (missed ticks due to loss / jitter)" and "Show network jitter / delivery error graph" to "Always".

This will show you every time network jitter happens in CS2, so you will be able to tell whether your fixes are working.
