Sound settings in CS2

Players tune this because in competitive games sound gives a huge advantage. Clearly audible footsteps tell you in advance where an enemy is coming from, and the sound of the bomb being defused lets you get out in time and stop it.

01

Choose the output device

CS2 works best with headphones in Stereo mode.

Open Settings → Audio → Audio Output Configuration

  • Choose Stereo Headphones

  • Don't use virtual 7.1 Surround — it interferes with the built-in HRTF

02

Turn on spatial audio (HRTF)

HRTF gives you accurate positioning of footsteps and sounds above/below.

In Audio → Advanced 3D Audio Processing

  • Make sure the option is on

  • This enables the built-in Steam Audio

03

Choose an EQ profile

The Crisp profile boosts the high frequencies where footsteps are heard.

Settings → Audio → EQ Profile

  • Choose Crisp

  • L/R Isolation: about 50% for balance

  • Perspective Correction: on

04

Turn off the music

The most important step

Music masks footsteps and bomb sounds.

Settings → Audio → Music Volume

  • Round Start/End: 0%

  • MVP: 0%

  • Bomb/Hostage: 0%

  • Ten Second Warning: 10–20% (keep it for timing)

05

Set up the system equalizer

Boosting the high frequencies makes footsteps and defusing clearer.

Open the equalizer of your sound card or Windows

  • Raise the 2–6 kHz range (footsteps)

  • Slightly lower the low frequencies (bass)

  • Save the profile for CS2
